Under the new rules, landlords must hand over the deposit to one of three government authorised tenancy deposit schemes (the Deposit Protection Service, Tenancy Deposit Solutions ltd and the Tenancy Deposit Scheme) within 14 days of receiving it. Schemes are completely independent of the Landlord, so any disputes will be settled fairly. If your landlord refuses to comply, the courts will be able to order him/her to give your deposit back, pay it into an appropriate scheme, and/or pay you three times its value. These rules appply to anyone signing a new assured shorthold tenancy on, or after 6 April 2007. As recognised experts in this field we are able to help.
